Essential oils are hugely popular at the moment, and for good reason! They’re natural and they get results. They’ve been used for thousands of years but I don’t believe they’ve ever been as understood or accessible as they are today. It’s great for those of us who turn to plants to help clean our homes, settle our emotions, keep bugs away and enhance our skincare regimen.

Australian essential oils company ECO. Modern Essentials produce pure, unadulterated essential oils, and are a leader within the sustainability sector, too. They are committed to ethical production and reducing waste, and their products and educational resources help anyone to transition to toxin-free, low-waste home and health alternatives.

Here are 5 reasons you should try Australian essential oils company ECO. Modern Essentials:

Australian essential oils, ethically made in Australia

ECO. Modern Essentials are an Aussie company who source essential oils from within Australia and around the world. All of their oils are bottled and blended here in Australia, and they have a range of Australian essential oils that are also grown here: Lemon Myrtle, Blue Mallee Eucalyptus , Kunzea, Tea Tree, Blue Cypress (currently out of stock) and Australian Sandalwood (10%) — all Australian native essential oils — as well as Tasmanian-grown Lavender, Mandarin, Australian Peppermint, and their Australian Shores blend which features tea tree and eucalyptus with vanilla and lemon.

All of ECO. Modern Essential’s carrier oils and essential oils are harvested from ethical sources and their entire range is vegan and PETA-approved cruelty-free. Their facilities are TGA compliant, Australian Certified Organic, GMP Compliant, and are audited regularly, and all of their essential oils are GC/MS tested internally and by a third party before bottling, to ensure the highest purity and quality.

Unique products you won’t find elsewhere

Many of their single essential oils and blends are comparable with other essential oil companies, but ECO. Modern Essentials also have some very unique products! Some blends you won’t find anywhere else include their Zodiac oils: they have a special blend for each sun sign which can be bought individually, in a three-pack for each element (water, fire, earth and air), or as a whole Zodiac collection.

Another blend we love and have found very useful in our house is their TGA-listed Anxiety blend, which contains sweet orange, lavender, ylang-ylang and frankincense. I used it a lot when Allegra was very worried about some upcoming dental procedures, and it really helped her calm down. It helps me too, and I also love that for every purchase of this blend, $1 is donated to Beyond Blue: an independent Australian non-profit helping with suicide prevention and mental health.

Other unique products include their Meditation blend, this very highly-reviewed Body oil, their Paris essential oil blend, their Certified Organic range, and their Christmas Delights which include Gingerbread, Christmas Pudding and Candy Cane blends!

And I love their quality Diffuser range, which includes low-tech Banksia Seed Pod diffusers (wonderful for bedrooms and bathrooms), and this awesome Nebulizing diffuser which atomises oils directly from the bottle!

Their newest range is a Mindset Collection, featuring six intentions: Courage, Rise, Empowerment, Strength, Nurture, and Optimism. The oils are designed to help you embody your chosen positive attribute throughout the day, and each individual oil also supports a different charity:

  • Courage supports WIRES, Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation.
  • Empowerment supports the National Breast Cancer Foundation to continue their research, as they do not receive any government funding.
  • Nurture supports Red Nose to help families who experience the loss of a pregnancy, baby or child.
  • Optimism supports the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to protect and restore the reef for future generations.
  • Rise supports RizeUp Australia to create safety for victims of domestic and family violence.
  • Strength supports Waves of Wellness to use surf therapy to help people of any age experiencing mental health challenges.

ECO. Modern Essentials is donating $1 from every Mindset blend sold to its correlating charity.

Excellent sustainability and recycling initiatives

ECO. Modern Essentials are partnered with Terracycle to recycle ALL of their products! And when you send three or more empty containers back to ECO. for recycling you get $15 off your next order.

ECO. Modern Essentials will also recycle bottles from other brands, so you can send back empty oil bottles from any brand you’ve used and feel good knowing that they’ll be recycled. (Please note only ECO. bottles will count towards the three units needed to receive your $15 credit).

All of ECO. Modern Essentials’ packaging is from FSC-certified sources, and use water-based inks and glues. They’re currently phasing out boxes for single oils, and recently transitioned to triangle-shaped boxes for oil collections to reduce packaging.

Other sustainability initiatives from ECO. Modern Essentials include partnering with Carbon Neutral to offset their emissions for deliveries and shipping, using glass instead of plastic bottles for all skincare products, and getting their boxes manufactured locally instead of in China.

No multi-level marketing

I learned about essential oils through my work with Young Living many years ago, and while I still love and use some of their products, I do not love their business model. I left after about five years of working consistently part time with them, and only made enough money to cover my expenses once I started offering massages with their oils.

Their MLM system requires large purchases each month before members can earn commissions, and I earned a little through my ‘downline’ but it was never more than I spent. I also took issue with how their staff treated people, and how they constantly pushed the idea that ‘only their products were pure’. After a few incidents I decided that their business was not for me.

With my Freespirit oil: definitely pure, and divine!

I also use (and like) some DoTerra products through a friend of mine, and she has done well through their company. I haven’t explored it thoroughly but it seems to me that DoTerra treats their supporters better than Young Living did.

Still I’m very happy to just buy essential oils, without any mention of multi-level marketing! I really like that ECO. Modern Essentials doesn’t subscribe to that business model, but still gives shoppers reward points that can be redeemed for discounts and exclusive products. I much prefer just to shop whenever I need something, and if I earn a reward at some point then great! It’s a bonus, not an incentive to buy things I don’t need.

ECO.Modern Essentials do have Subscription Boxes available for customers who want to build a collection (or purchase separately for a lovely, sustainable gift idea), and a Wholesale purchase option for businesses who want to stock their products. But these are not commission-based programs and are not requirements for anyone.

Their prices!

This was one of the main reasons I tried ECO. Modern Essentials to begin with. I initially wasn’t sure their products would be up to the same standard that I was used to, but I was happy to find that they are.

Their prices are significantly cheaper than the big brands, but their products are still pure and they do work as intended. Some of the traditionally very expensive oils such as Helichrysum, Sandalwood, Rose, Jasmine, German Chamomile, Neroli, and Melissa are diluted 3% – 10% with carrier oils, which keeps their prices low. These diluted oils still have benefits and still have powerful scents!

I really appreciate ECO. Modern Essentials’ lower prices, and wonder if some other brands use a Premium Pricing strategy to create the image of prestige for their products. Or perhaps it’s because this company doesn’t have a commission-based system that they’re able to keep their prices so reasonable.

ECO. Modern Essentials also offer a 10% discount to students, which is a lovely gesture! And they offer free shipping on all orders over AUD$20.

Final thoughts, and my favourite products

This aromatherapy company is making some lovely products that are fairly priced, and doing it in an ethical and sustainable way. I’m really glad ECO. Modern Essentials found me, and I’m happy to recommend them to you! If you like to use essential oils or have been thinking about trying them for your health and home, I’m sure you won’t regret trying their products.

If you’re new to essential oils be sure to have a read through their free resources. And if you’re interested to know what my favourite products are so far, in no particular order they are:

  1. Anxiety Blend: it really works
  2. Freespirit Blend: a delicious, uplifting blend
  3. The new Mindset Collection: especially Optimism, Strength & Courage
  4. Digestive Blend: lovely for tummies
  5. Immune Support: for disinfecting and health boosting
  6. Pisces Blend: it’s like it was created just for me!
